Work in Progress

The creator, in my experience, is often seen in his/her work. Particularly in comics. Today’s webcomics are full of it, in one way or another. Whether it’s creators simply writing about what they know, or just afraid to give their characters attributes or opinions that aren’t the their own. With many webcomics with even a small tie to pop culture, you can be pretty sure that the author is into what his/her main character is, say anime or Star Wars. I think that makes people a little afraid to develop their characters more, out of fear of embarrassment. “I don’t want people thinking I like emo music”, for example. In so many comics, there’ll be the dominant opinion on what’s hot and what’s not; music tastes in this example. Yes, there may be an main character into “emo” music, but so much humour will be derived from that character’s taste in music in a negative way, and the character’s tastes will never be as well justified as the other who shares tastes with the author. I guess that’d be my general tip to comic creators… if anyone cared. Don’t make your characters too close to home or you’ll end up very restricted in terms of what you can do with character, story and humour.

Hmm. Has anyone seen my paragraphs?
